BMW engines are identified by a code beginning with M (for Motor).
The Motorsport-developed engines have their own code series, and are identified by the intial S (for Sport).

| A typical
modern Motorsport engine code is S38 B36. This breaks down into two
groups : the first group (S38) identifies the basic engine type, while the second (B36) identifies the swept volume (in this case, 3.6-litres). The larger-capasity variant of the S38 engine with 3.8-litre swept volume is known as an S38 B38. |
